Trouble Getting Through to the CRA? Here’s What You Can Do

If you’ve been trying to get in touch with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) lately, you’re not alone. Whether it’s to access your account, retrieve a notice of assessment, or clarify information that could impact your mortgage application or renewal, wait times have become a growing issue — and in some cases, getting through at all can feel impossible.

With recent news confirming hundreds of job cuts at the CRA (CTV News), the challenge of speaking with a live agent is becoming more common. For many Canadians, this can create real stress — especially if you’re in the middle of a time-sensitive financial decision like applying for a mortgage, renewing a loan, or providing proof of income.

So what are your options when you’re stuck and can’t get through?

    1. Check the CRA’s Official Contact Page — and Be Ready to Act Quickly

The first step is to visit the CRA’s Contact Information Page. Once there, scroll down to “Personal taxes, benefits and trusts”, then look under the “Phone” section.

You’ll see the phone number to call along with the estimated wait time — but here’s the tricky part. If average wait times exceed 30 minutes, the line will close and you’ll see the word “unavailable” instead.

    Pro Tip:

Refresh the page periodically and call the moment a wait time appears. It’s your best shot at getting through to an agent before the queue fills up again.

    2. Reach Out to Your Member of Parliament (MP)

If you’ve tried repeatedly and still can’t connect with the CRA, consider contacting your local Member of Parliament. Many Canadians don’t realize that your MP’s office may be able to assist with CRA-related issues — especially when it involves time-sensitive matters like accessing government documents for mortgage approvals or tax concerns.

You can find your MP and their contact details by visiting www.ourcommons.ca.

Explain your situation clearly and politely. If your mortgage approval is being held up due to missing tax documents or account access issues, let them know. They may be able to help escalate your request.

    3. Get Help from a Mortgage Broker

If your CRA issue is holding up your mortgage process, it may be worth talking to a mortgage professional. At The Local Broker, we understand how frustrating this situation can be — and in some cases, we may be able to help find a workaround.

Whether you’re applying for a mortgage, looking to refinance, or planning to renew an existing mortgage, a good broker can often guide you through the paperwork and help find alternative documentation when CRA access isn’t available.

    Why This Matters

When you apply for a mortgage or renewal, lenders often require CRA documents like your Notice of Assessment (NOA), T4 slips, or proof of income. Delays in accessing these can hold up your mortgage approval, prevent you from securing the best rate, or even impact your ability to close on a new home.

Being prepared — and knowing your options — can make a big difference.

    Final Thoughts

It’s frustrating to be stuck, especially when something as important as your home financing is on the line. But with a bit of strategy, persistence, and support, you still have options. Refresh the CRA contact page, reach out to your MP, and don’t hesitate to speak to a mortgage broker who can help guide you forward.

If you’re feeling stuck, reach out. We’re here to help.
